We always recommend this region for the remarkable variety on offer within a relatively compact area. For large groups with varied interests and fitness levels, you can’t ask for more. Warwickshire is home to Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Castle’s medieval grandeur. Herefordshire’s Wye Valley promises some of England’s most beautiful countryside. While Shropshire’s hills rival the Peak District with a fraction of the crowds. And last but not least, the Forest of Dean offers ancient woodland and a wilder character than the manicured villages nearby. As one group told us: “Lovely house, five minutes from the town centre and within easy reach of great things to do in the Wye Valley and beyond.”
Our West Midlands and Gloucestershire houses sleep 16 to 30 or more guests across Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, and Gloucestershire. You’ll find moated manor houses near Stratford, riverside properties in the Wye Valley, converted farmhouses in the Shropshire Hills, and Georgian rectories in market towns. All big enough to host your big group get-together without feeling squashed.
These properties are a real immersion into the local culture: timber-framed black-and-white houses in Herefordshire, red brick accommodation perfect for groups in Warwickshire, stone buildings in Gloucestershire. The thing they have in common is that they’re kitted out for a great British adventure. Boot rooms for muddy walks, wood burners for autumn evenings, and gardens with views of proper countryside.
Filter by dates, group size, and region to find available houses.
No commission, no agency fees — just transparent booking and personal service.
Many houses book quickly, especially for larger groups and summer weeks.
This area defies quick definition and that’s what makes it such a hit with groups on holiday. Warwickshire has Stratford-upon-Avon for Shakespeare and Warwick Castle for medieval spectacle. The Wye Valley offers riverside walking, canoeing, market towns like Ross-on-Wye, and the famous book town Hay-on-Wye. Shropshire has Ludlow’s food scene with more Michelin stars per capita than anywhere outside London, the Shropshire Hills, and Ironbridge, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. To really get back to nature, the Forest of Dean has ancient woodland, mountain biking trails, and a distinctive character shaped by its mining heritage. Cheltenham offers Regency elegance and the famous racecourse. Worcester and Hereford are proper cathedral cities with history stretching back centuries.
As one group described: “From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the breathtaking surroundings and the impeccable attention to detail that went into creating this tranquil retreat. Nestled amidst the stunning Forest of Dean, the house offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The location alone is worth every penny, as it allows you to reconnect with nature and enjoy the peace and serenity that only a place like this can provide. With easy access to several charming villages and nearby attractions, there’s no shortage of things to do and see. From exploring ancient woodlands to discovering the rich history of the Forest of Dean. I left feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and already planning my next visit.”
Just like the variety of holidays on offer, our properties span centuries and styles. You’ll find Tudor manor houses with original features, Georgian rectories near spa towns, converted barns that marry period charm with modern luxuries like underfloor heating, Victorian shooting lodges in Shropshire, and moated houses dating back to the Wars of the Roses.
The appeal for large groups is genuine variety and great value. Half your group could satisfy their Shakespeare fantasies in Stratford while the other half gets muddy and out of breath in the Forest of Dean. Then you can all come together to share stories over dinner. These are the makings of an unforgettable group trip.

When I was faced with having to find a large house with a pool for a family celebration at relatively short notice, Edmund at Landed Houses came straight to my aid. He responded promptly to my email enquiries, even on a Sunday, putting me in direct contact with someone who managed a property that fitted my needs; the outcome being that a superb house, with everything I need, was secured within 24 hours of my first enquiry. Many thanks, Edmund, for making the task so straightforward. If you’re looking for that special house for a party or family gathering I can recommend Landed Houses as your first port of call.

Properties here offer significantly better value than those in the Cotswolds. In our experience, holiday houses for groups in Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Warwickshire run around 25 to 40% cheaper than equivalent houses in prime Cotswolds villages. In real terms, that means a weekend in a property sleeping 16 might cost £4,000 to £5,500 here versus £6,000 to £8,000 in Chipping Campden or Stow. You get the same quality, often with more land and better facilities, minus the famous postcode.
For savings within the region, it’s worth knowing that properties 20 miles from famous tourist spots cost dramatically less, promising equal character for better value.
Groups prioritising budget without compromising on quality find this region delivers year after year.
This region excels at pleasing ages 2 to 82 simultaneously. At its most gentle, you’ve got Stratford-upon-Avon’s Shakespeare sites, boat trips on the canal, spa treatments in Cheltenham, antiques browsing, or garden visits at Hidcote and Kiftsgate.
On the more moderate side of things, you’ll find the Malvern Hills for hiking with manageable climbs and spectacular views, Warwick Castle (be sure to catch the medieval demonstrations, the kids will love them), and the accessible trails of the Forest of Dean.
For the foodies, you’ve got Ludlow food festival in September, plus year-round farmers’ markets, vineyard tours, and cider farm visits in Herefordshire.
The region’s compact size means you can schedule a full day of activities without having to drive for hours in between stops. And you can all meet up at the pub after to compare souvenirs.
The River Wye winds through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Welsh English border. Rent a large house in the Wye Valley and get ready for a weekend of riverside walks, canoeing and kayaking, scoping out the views at Symonds Yat rock, exploring the ruins of Tintern Abbey, and of course pottering around Hay-on-Wye’s famous second-hand bookshops. Properties here often sit right on the river with private fishing rights for any keen anglers in your group.
The Wye Valley is generally quieter and less discovered than more famous regions. And groups that stumble upon the area tend to return, which says it all.
Absolutely, this is one of Britain’s best-connected holiday spots. We think basing yourselves here is a brilliant way to make the most of the region and all it has to offer. It’s particularly ideal if some of your group is visiting from abroad and wants to take in the best of the UK in just a few days.
From a central base you can get to Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Castle in 30 min, Blenheim Palace in 40 minutes, Oxford, Bath, and Birmingham in 45 minutes, and Bristol in an hour. From Shropshire, you can travel to Ironbridge Gorge in 15 min, Shrewsbury in 20 min, the Welsh borders in 30 minutes and Chester in an hour.
To keep things manageable, groups often do one big day trip mid-week while keeping other days for more local activities.
The Forest of Dean is an ancient royal forest with a character all its own. And there’s so much to do there. You’ve got mountain biking at Cannop Cycle Centre, walking trails through oak woodland, Puzzlewood, which was the location for Star Wars and Doctor Who, Clearwell Caves, and the wonderful sculpture trails. It’s a more rustic and adventurous experience than the manicured villages elsewhere in Gloucestershire. Properties here suit groups wanting outdoor activities and adventure rather than village browsing and cream teas.
